How to Handle a Tachi
Originally designed for cavalry, the tachi is distinguished by its optimal use on horseback. This long, curved saber allowed samurai to effectively attack their opponents while galloping. Handling the tachi requires a specific technique, where the position of the blade and the style of carrying are essential to fully leverage its design oriented towards mobility and efficiency in mounted combat. Additional straps on the scabbard facilitate secure attachment and quick access, essential during rapid movements and direction changes on the battlefield.
The Tachi is the Ancestor of the Katana
The tachi is recognized as the direct ancestor of the katana. Although similar in their construction and forging methods, these two types of sabers have distinct characteristics adapted to their respective eras. The tachi, with its more pronounced curve and longer blade, was ideal for mounted samurai. Over time, the katana gained popularity due to its versatility and ease of handling, even on foot. Alongside this evolution, other types of sabers like the ninjato also emerged. The katana's design, shorter and differently curved, eventually supplanted that of the tachi, thus ending its evolution. Today, although the katana is more common, the tachi remains an iconic figure in the history of Japanese swords!
